The
Launch of the Irish Institute of Mental Health Nursing
The Irish Institute of Mental
Health Nursing (IIMHN) was officially launched by Mr. John Moloney
(Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children) on the 17th
of June in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin.
Speaking at the launch the Minister welcomed the formation of the
Institute and stressed its importance in developing mental health
nursing in Ireland in delivering quality patient care through the
implementation of Vision for Change. The minister spoke of the ‘timely’
nature of the development and the opportunity that the Institute would
provide for nurses ‘to contribute both individually and collectively to
the development of the profession of nursing and the mental health
services in this time of change and development’.
Other Speakers at
the launch included: Professor Agnes Higgins, Trinity College Dublin
Chairperson IIMHN, Professor Patrick Callaghan, Professor of Mental
Health Nursing, Nottingham University, John Redican, National Executive
Officer, National Service Users Executive, Mary Farrelly, Professional
Development Officer, National Council for the Professional Development
of Nursing and Midwifery, Martin Rogan, Assistant National Director
Mental Health, HSE and Colum Bracken, Director of Nursing, Dublin South
West Mental Health Services. The Launch was attended by over 80 mental
health nurses from all parts of the country, representing all aspects of
mental health care, together with representatives from the Mental Health
Commission, Amnesty International, Service User Groups, Department of
Health and Children, National Council for the Professional Development
of Nursing and Midwifery and An Bord Altranais.
